The beginning…

The site isn’t even designed yet, but I’ve decided to jump the gun and start the blog anyways! I’d like there to be some content up here by the time the site launches, which is September 1st 2008!
This concept has been around for some time now, waiting for just the right time to come out. It’s been through a few changes in my head before coming to the stage it’s at now!
The Glossy
I came up with the GreenBook concept a few months ago during a slow time in my graphic design business. I tend to think big… sometimes a little too big. I wanted to publish a business directory for eco-conscious people in my general area. That much has stayed the same. However, in my mind, the first incarnation of this directory was going to be a 24 page, full sized glossy magazine full of display ads, articles, and helpful green hints. I was going to publish this guide twice a year, and bag all of the big corporate advertisers right away! I came from the publishing industry where putting together a 24 page glossy mag in a matter of weeks was no sweat, however, sometimes you forget that there’s a whole team of people working on that mag; sales, writers, designers, distributors, administrators, etc. I soon realized that this would be a huge job for one person to undertake.
The Website
I have come to the conclusion that a website is the best possible way for me to bring eco-conscious people and eco-friendly goods and services together, without impacting the environment! The benefits of an online directory over a printed one are many.
- No printed material means no paper!
- Nothing to distribute, means no gas being used
- Information can be updated instantly
- Lower overhead means I can offer more to my advertisers
So, with that, Green-book.ca was born!
