Top 10 ways to stay warm

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I’ve felt it, you’ve felt it; fall is coming. As much as I’d love to hang onto the nice weather for as long as I can, we’ve got to prepare for the chilly nights and days in Grey Bruce.

I know you’re all tempted to start turning up your thermostats, cranking up the heaters, and firing up the wood stoves in these first few chilly nights. I have a few alternative options for you! These should help you stay commited to keeping your thermostats down, heaters low, and wood stoves at a dull roar this season.

  1. Sweaters: It seems pretty obvious, but lets start with obvious and work our way back. Putting on a nice warm cozy sweater can do a lot to stave off the fall chilliness.
  2. Have a Blankie: I have a lovely small blanket in every room to wrap around myself when I’m feeling chilly.
  3. Slippers & Hats: Most of your body heat escapes through your feet and your head, so cover them up! Look for a nice comfortable cap to wear indoors, or make your own! (hmmm, I see a future blog entry coming from this one)
  4. Hot Drinks: Sip some nice organic tea, or fair trade coffee to keep your insides warm.
  5. Exercise: If you’re feeling chilly, go out for a walk or a bike ride. When you get back home, you’ll be plenty warm!
  6. Flannel Bedsheets: There’s nothing more excruciating than slipping into bed only to find your cotton sheets are more like ice than fabric. This is never an issue if you switch to flannel sheets in the fall.
  7. Snuggle your pets: See those two at the top of the page? Bilbo and Clara have the right idea when it comes to autumn chills. They’ve been kind enough to snuggle up on MY lap too, lucky me!
  8. Snuggle each other: Gather your significant other, parents, kids, friends or anyone else who may be in the room for a nice group snuggle.  Body heat is the nicest heat there is.
  9. Hot Water Bottle: It’s a much more energy efficient source of heat than an electric blanket.
  10. Use the Sun: Keep your curtains open during the sunny hours, and close them up during the night!

Those little tips should get your internal furnaces going this fall. If you have any tips of your own, please leave ‘em in the comments!

Note: Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about my local foods series, there’s a lot of research to be done! Especially when it comes to bakeries… yum!

Calling all locals!

Friday, September 26th, 2008

After being so dismayed by my stale mass-produced grocery store buns, I’ve been inspired by some twitter friends to do a series of posts on local food producers. But I need your help!

I’ve only lived in the Grey/Bruce area for 2 years, and I have yet to sample the good local foods in every town. I’m asking all of you in the area to send me your local favs!

Here are my ideas so far:

For this series of posts, I believe the old fashioned farmer’s market rules shall apply: Make it, Bake it, or Grow it.

As always, I’m open to your suggestions on posts, so drop me a line anytime! You can either leave your suggestions in the comments portion of this post, or send me an email at info@green-book.ca.

Treewala from Greenwala

Treewala from Greenwala

We’ve all heard of Free Rice, the online word game that helps to feed hungry people around the world.

The folks over at Greenwala have come up with a similar wordgame called Treewala. For every correct answer, you’re helping to fund Greenwala’s efforts to plant more trees! 20 correct answers = one whole tree.

So check it out, play the game, plant some trees, and you might just learn something while you’re at it ;)
