Calling all locals!
After being so dismayed by my stale mass-produced grocery store buns, I’ve been inspired by some twitter friends to do a series of posts on local food producers. But I need your help!
I’ve only lived in the Grey/Bruce area for 2 years, and I have yet to sample the good local foods in every town. I’m asking all of you in the area to send me your local favs!
Here are my ideas so far:
- Bakeries
- Butchers
- Dairy suppliers
- Farmers Markets
- Fruit & Veggie growers
- Food stores
- Restaurants
For this series of posts, I believe the old fashioned farmer’s market rules shall apply: Make it, Bake it, or Grow it.
As always, I’m open to your suggestions on posts, so drop me a line anytime! You can either leave your suggestions in the comments portion of this post, or send me an email at info@green-book.ca.

This is a GREAT idea! I only wished I lived in the area to support/help/advise. Unfortunately I will have to support from afar - but at least I can share and promote, right?
Good luck!

Aw, I should’ve known that by southwestern Ontario, you still mean the area 5 hours north of me! Darn my living in the ass end of Ontario…
(Windsor smells like Detroit.)
There are a couple great Farmers’ Markets around here though … Joseph’s Produce on Tecumseh Rd West, Fred’s Farm Fresh Produce on Huron Church. And lots of stands outside of town (the best!)
I wish I knew bakeries in my area, though! Can’t think of any!
Grandma Lambs in Meaford is awesome for locally grown and home made items.
The best butcher shop in Ontario, is Walkerton Meat Market. It is family owned so they know everything there is to feeding their live stock. Custom cuts, friendly faces, down to earth people.
Bakery, a 10 goes top Schultz’s in Hanover. I still speak regularly to the baker that worked there when I was a small child.Scary thought is that I am now 60, and the old baker is 93 and still bakes at home for his wife and cat.
For fruits such as apples etc I go north to Meaford , Collingwood and surrounds, a great yearly drive in Oct to celebrate anniversary. regards m. burgess
