Eco-Office tips
Hi there. You’ve probably noticed by now that this site is run by my graphic design company, Viddyworks Design Studio. Since starting up this operation in April 2008, I’ve been striving to do all that I can to practice what I preach: Green business practices!
Now, by showing you this diagram, I don’t mean to imply that I’m really this neat and organized all the time, although I do try!
- Recycled Post-It notes: I wish I could tell you where I got these nifty recycled Post-It notes, but they were a gift! However, I’m sure you’d find them quickly if you inquired at your local office supplies store.
- Magnetic Whiteboard: This keeps me from writing an insane amount of notes, thereby cutting down my paper usage
- Recycled Notebook: I try to minimize the amount of notes I do take, but sometimes they are definitely needed! This notebook is made from 100% recycled paper, and is available at Zeller’s in Hanover.
- Recycled, Low VOC Paint: This paint was a fantastic find! Not only is it recycled and low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), but it’s much cheaper than the regular paint! Boomerang Paint purchased at Hanover Rona for around $12 per gallon.
- Hand-Made desk: This desk is one of a kind, and uses as few materials as possible. The whole thing is made from ONE 4 x 8 sheet of 3/4 inch thick pine. Remember: If you can get something hand made, that means it hasn’t been mass produced.
- Eco-Friendly Promo: All Viddyworks‘ and Green Book promo is printed using a waterless process on 100% recycled papers with vegetable based inks. Yours can be too!
- Organic Lavender & Flax Eye Pillows: Staring at the screen all day long can make my eyes mighty tired! When they need a rest, I use these eye pillows to give them a rest. These can be ordered from Nothing Finer. These can be warmed up in the microwave, or cooled in the freezer depending on what your eyes need!
- Green Reading: I do my best to keep up with environmental concerns and advances in my industry. This issue of Design Edge Canada focuses on Green Design, and is just one of several blogs and magazines I read to keep up on environmental issues in the Graphic Design world.
- CFL bulbs: I think nearly everyone is onto this one by now, the light bulb in that lamp is an energy efficient Compact Florescent Lightbulb.
- Responsible Beverage Intake: Uh oh, you caught me with a disposable coffee cup on my desk! But wait… if you had a higher res photo, you could look a little closer. You’d see that the cup, sleeve, and lid are all 100% biodegradable, and the tea inside is Organic and Fair Trade. It’s true that bringing your own reusable mug is the best option, however, I didn’t have it with me today and this was the best I could do! Visit the White Rose coffee shop in Walkerton for these tastey teas and more!
Next Post: What you don’t see in the above photo is just as important as what you DO see! Stay tuned…
